SILAPPATHIKARAM - Moolamum Thiranaaivum; MANIMEKALAI - Moolamum. Thiranaaivum : Both edited by Dr. R. Srinivasan.

The twin epics, Silappathikaram and Manimekalai, are the most celebrated in the history of Tamil literature. They are also known as early epics. These two works have been published for the benefit of the students, researchers and the common readers.

Silappathikaram is the story of Kannagi and Kovalan, composed by the Chera prince, Ilango Adigal. Manimekalai is the story of Kovalan's daughter, born through Madhavi, the reputed danseuse.

The first book under review contains, besides the text, a series of critical essays which might be found quite useful by students from the examination point of view. The text is neatly presented with suitable sub-titles. Any Tamil reader will find the book attractive and easily readable.

The second book also contains a series of critical essays. The editor has beautifully presented the story part in modern prose form, which has enhanced the utility value of the book. Literary expertise and scholarship of the editor can be easily seen on every page of the two books. These two volumes will enable the students and common readers to derive maximum benefit out of them.
