In spite of this disadvantage I had had a earnest desire to direct the attention of students to sound critical study of at least the few prescribed text of classical poems and see what effect would be pro duced on them when they are taught in the light < modern poetry-criticism in general. Although I fel incompetent for the task, yet I ventured to make th attempt which, as I afterwards found to my grea satisfaction, proved highly successful not only amon the studer er my College but also among those who stand outside the pale of university learning an study Tamil i private out of pure love. The benefit that had accrued to students from a critical and com parative study of poetry became patent and ever sinc the time that attempted my critical method of teach ing poetry my scheme was put into practice only orally But an occasion presented itself to me for bringing my critical method of teaching into writing alsc While I was engaged in teaching Mullaippattu to my students of the senior B. A. class, they requested m to write a critical commentary on this beautiful idyl on the new lines and subscribed in advance to defray the cost of printing.
