Grammar is the art of rightly expressing our thoughts by words. = இலக்கண மாவது, - நம்முடைய நினைவுகளை வார்தைகளாலே ஒழுங்காய்விசிதப்படுத்து கிறது சாஸ்திரம்
Grammar treats of sentences, and of the several parts of which they are compounded. = இலக்கணமாவது வசனங்களையும் அவைகள் அடங்கிய அநேகம்பிரிவுகளையும் விளம்புகிறது.
Sentences consist of words; words, of one or more Syllables; Syllables, of one or more letters. = வசனங்கள் வாத்தைகளைக் கொண்டும் வார்தைகள் ஒரு அல்லது அநேக மசைகளைக் கொண்டு மசைகள் ஒரு அல்லது அநேக மக்ஷரங்களைக் கொண்டவைகளுமா யிருக்கின்றவைகள்.
So that Letters, Syllables, words, & Sentences, make up the whole subject of Grammar. = அவ்வண்ணமாய் அக்ஷரங்களும் அசைகளும் வார்த்தைகளும் வசனங்களும், இலக்கணத்துள் அடங்கிய பொருள்களாயிருக்கின்றவைகள்
OF ETYMOLOGY. வார்த்தைகள் பிறப்பின் விளக்கத்தைச்சேர்ந்தது.
Etymology explains the derivation of words, in order to arrive at the first primary signification; and teaches the various modifications by which the sense of the same word is diversified; as = ETYMOLOGY என்பது வார்த்தைகளின் ஆதிமுதலான அந்தத்தை அறிகிறதற்காக அவைகளின் பிறப்பைவிஸ்திரிக்குது பின்னும் ஒருவார்த்தையின் பயனை வித்தியாசப் படுத் தியிருக்கிற பலபல மாறுதல்களைக்கற்பிக்கிறது அதாவது,
