On the Harijan Dialect of Tamil Dr. S. WAIDYANATHAN University of Pennsylvania, U.S.A. The objective of this paper is to give an outline of the phonology of the colloquial variety of Tamil, as spoken by the Harijan in the South Arcot District. The Harijans belong to the lowest class in South India. Many of them are cultivators. The phonemes of Harijan Dialect of Tamil are as follows: Vowels: 1, i , e, e :, a, a i, о, о :, u, u :. Consonants : p, b, t, d, t, k, c, s, r, l, 1, m, п, т, V, У, Х, Ц, f. - ! is phonetically realized as [I] (low-high front unrounded short vowel) has a wide distribution. (Ir#mbi) “iron’ | i: / phonetically realized as i: (high front unrounded long vowel) s (ti : nI) "food’ ful has two allophones [v] and [o]. [v] is phonetically lowhigh back rounded short vowel occurs in the initial syllables of word utterence. 294
