வரம்பிகந்த வருணனைகளும், வடமொழிக் கலவை பெற்ற சொற்கள் அமைப்பும், கடிமைான பல்வேறு வகைப் பட்ட யாப்பு வடிவங்களும் அமைந்த நடையினை ஒட்டக் கூத்தர் கையாண்டுள்ளார் என்றும், மன்னர்கள் நிகழ்த்திய போர்களைப் புகழ்ந்து பாடுதலைத் தவிர்த்து, நன்மைக்கும் தீமைக்கும் இடையே நடக்கும் போராட்டத்தைப் பாடத் தம் புலமையைப் பயன்படுத்தினார் ஒட்டக்கூத்தர் என்றும் பல்கலைச் செல்வர் தெ. பொ. மீளுட்சிசுந்தரனார் கூறுவர். ?
டாக்டர் மு. வ. அவர்கள் தாம் எழுதிய தமிழ் இலக் கிய வரலாறு' என்னும் நூலில், ஒட்டக்கூத்தர் நூல்கள் புலவர்களிடையே பெருவழக்கினைக் கம்பரது நூல் இராமாயணத்தின் அளவிற்குப் பெறாமற் போனமை குறித்துப் பின்வருமாறு காரணம் காட்டுவர்.

- He has developed a style full of exaggerations,
sanskrit compounds and difficult varieties of metres. He must have felt that then ultra grand style becomes nothing but an un natural exaggeration when applied to the description of ordinary battles which are becoming less and less glorious and less frequent. Therefore he conceived the idea of making use of this style to sing the glories of the universal fight between the good and the evil.”
