திருவொற்றியூர்த் தொகை முதலிய அருட்பாடல்கள் பதினோராந் திருமுறையில் சேர்ந்துள்ளன. பட்டினத்தார் இறுதியாகத் திருவொற்றியூரடைந்து சிலகாலம் இருந்தார். ஒருநாள், அவ்வூர்ப் புறத்தே மாடு மேய்க்குஞ் சிறுவர்களோடு வழக்கப்படி விளையாடுவது போல விளையாடி, அங்கிருந்த ஒரு குழியில் அமர்ந்து தம்மை மணலுஞ் செடி கொடிகளுங் கொண்டு மூடச் செய்து, இறைவனோடு இரண்டறக் கலந்து, அங்கேயே சிவலிங்க உருவாய் விளங்கப் பெற்றார். திருவொற்றியூரில் பட்டினத்தார் சமாதி நிலை கொண்ட கோயில் இன்றும் உள்ளது. "எல்லாப் பிழையும் பொறுத்து அருள்வாய் கச்சி ஏகம்பனே!" என்று தென்னாப்பிரிக்கத் தமிழ் மக்கள் அன்றாடம் உருகிப் பாடும் திருப்பாடல் பட்டினத்தார் அருள் மொழியாகும். _ ΡΑΤΤΙΝΑΤΗΤΗΑΑR For generations Saivism and Tamil were nurtured and popularised by many writers. Among them Pattinathu Pillaiyar takes the place of pride of place. Pattinaththaar was born at Kaviripoompattinam. He belonged to a family of traders. Sivaneyar was his father, and his mother's name was Gnanakalai Ammaiyar. Thiruvenkadar was the name given to Pattinaththaar in his early days. Pattinaththaar lost his father at a very young age of five years. He became a trader by profession but learnt all arts; at the proper age he got married to Siva Kalai. For long they did not have children; later, through the blessings of the chief priest of ThiruvidaiMaruthur temple. God gave them a child to be adopted as their own. This child came to be called Maruthapiran. Maruthapiran, in his sixteenth year, crossed seas and took up trade. He gave all his earnings to his father and a small trunk to his mother and disappeared. The parents searched in vain for their child. When they opened the trunk they found a needle without its eye, and a palm leaf. A line of verse was written on the palm leaf. On it was written that in the final analysis even a useless needle will not go with you in your last journey. This made Pattinaththaar take to ascetic life. 157
