FoREWoRр (Professor V. A. DEVASENAPATHI) It gives me great pleasure to write this Foreword to Prof. N. Subbu Reddiyar's Saiva Samaya Vilakku. Like a lamp spreading its light to remove darkness and reveal the presence of objects, this book is intended to remove ignorance regarding Saiva Siddhanta and explain the basic principles of this system. Prof. N. Subbu Reddiyar has employed the technique of expounding the system in the form of letters from an elderly person to one who is young in age and is eager to learn about this system. This epistolary form gives it a personal touch and makes us feel that the matter dealt with is of vital interest and is not a treatment of abstract or abstruse issues. Dr. N. Subbu Reddiyat’s aim is to make this book a source of perenninal interest to each succeeding generation of young persons. ‘Saiva Siddhanta may be traced back to the Vedas and Saiva Agamas on one side and Tamil works ranging from the Tolkappiyam and Sangam classics, to ths works of the Samayacaryas and Santanacaryas ឧណ្ណ៥ later-day saints and şavantş.
