This, however, does not rule out periodie review of the system so that the basie principles may be studied in the context of systems that are in vogue from time to time. Thus besides dealing with the Carvaka a contemporary exposition of Saiva 'Siddhanta may well review it in the light of Marxism. “Rationalism, Lingusstic Analysis etc. Prof. N. Subbu Reddiyar prepares the ground for such a challenging work by giving a detailed and lucid exposition of Saiva Siddhanta. There is an introductory section which deals with Saiva Siddhanta literature. There are three succeeding sections dealing with the basic categories, Pati, Pasu and Pasam (God, souls and bonds). Arguments for the acceptance of these categories are taken up for exposition along with an account of their nature in these essential or primary and relative aspects. We have two sections on the means of attainment and the fruit of attachment. ssiva Siddhanta is not only of academic interest but is also the basis of a living faith. Hence the author concludes his survey with an exposition of the practical aspects of worship. Prof. Reddiyar is one of our səniormost famil scholars.
