பாட்டுடைத் தலைவன் வேறு என்ற கருத்தினை நிலைநாட்ட முனைந்துள்ளார். திருவாளர் பி. டி. சீனிவாச அய்யங்கார் அவர்கள்:
“Senguttuvan is the hero of the third canto. The other intentifies him with Kadal Pirakkottiya Velkelu Kuttuvan, the hero of Paranar’s poem, the fifth ode, în the Padirruppattu, and attributes the latters exploits, mentioned in that ode to senguttuvan. But neither the name Senguttuvannar his expedition to North India, is mentioned in the ode. Kuttuvau, seral ect were the general titles of all Sera Kings ..... When a specific name had to be given to any one of these kings... an epithet was prefixed to the family name. e. g. Perunjeral, kadal pirakkottiya kuttuvan. ...... Hence, as Kadal · Pirakkottiya Kuttuvan and senguttavan were both personal names, if they were the same person, it would be a case of, one man having two names, which was not usual in old times”. சிலப்பதிகாரம் வஞ்சிக் காண்டத்தில், பாட்டுடைத் தலைவன் பெயர் எல்லா இடங்களிலும் செங்குட்டுவன் என்றே வரவில்லை. பல இடங்களில் அவ்வாறு வந்திருந்தாலும், ஒரு சில இடங்களில் வேறு வடிவிலும் வந்துளது: சிறப்பு அடை ஏதும் இன்றிக் குட்டுவன் என்றும் வந்துளது.
