#83 1. We should avoid as far as possible duplication of work and delay in publishing materials already collected. In this context I am constrained to point out that thousands of Tamil Inscriptions already copied are lying idle without seeing the light of the day and many are not still copied and about 26,000 of Tamil technical terms coined by the office of Tamil Encyclopaedia published in ten volumes under the Chief Editorship of Thiru M. P. Periasami Thooran, a substantial Tamil poet, short-story writer and essayist who started his career as a mathematics teacher in Ramakrishna Vidyalaya High School, Coimbatore, under the inspiring leadership of its founder-father Thiru T. S. Avinasilingam Chettiar who paved the way for the publication of Tamil Er,cyclopaedia and for medium of instruction in Tamil at the University level while he was the Minister for Education. 2. An immediate survey of rural vocobulary is to be undertaken before the impact of urban languages and life uproot our villages through transistors, film shows now and television shows later! Moreover such a survey will contribute greatly to the compilation of a Dialect Dictionary. It is in these two vital matters that I hope and trust, the present Central Institute of Indian Languages or the future Institute of Indian Dictionaries will play a dynamic role in the near future.
