pleasure, composed in honour of your and my particular friend P. M. Madooray Pillay Esquire, Ship Dubash and Municipal Commissioner of Rangoon, the worthy hero of your invaluable poem, who most enviably deserves all your worthy encomiums. You have no doubt selected the Kove as the species of poem by which you can best portray your right appreciation “... of his worth and the constant tender feelings you and all his true friends have for him who is a model of an enterprising gentleman of a most amiable disposition. I say you have best selected the Rovei, because, of the five parts of Tamil Grammar, Orthography (எழுத்திலக்கணம்), Etymology (சொல்லிலக்கணம்), Prosody (யாப் 1939 isgorič), the part that treats of Rhetorical figures or Ornaments of thought and words (jaxfu$avés syù), and the de rebus seu amplificatione of the Rev J. Beschi, or that which treats of the properties or qualities of things (@LTCŞaffewässorso), Kovei belongs to one of the two parts into which the last mentioned is divided; viz., Ascourger, in which rules are laid down for composing amatory poems; the other being Lipi;(0.1705er, which contains rules for composing war-chants or moral verses; and it reflects

great credit on you, as you have ventured very successfully, these days when vernaculars are wantonly neglected by a majority

I have perused your Madooray-Kovei with greatest

of educated natives and when there is no Chola or Pandyan rajah to patronize Tamil poets, to compose Kovei, which is generally forgotten or not practised at all, even by eminent pandits.
