OCR gadget testing

Hi Balajijagadesh,

(Sorry for writing in English.) I've been working on a new OCR gadget for Wikisources who aren't well-supported by other existing OCR systems. It uses Google's Cloud Vision API to process the images.

I'm wondering if you'd be able to help test it on Tamil Wikisource? It needs a few system messages set up, as well as adding to MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition. You can also test it just for yourself by adding it to your common.js page.

I've written up some instructions on mul:Wikisource:Google OCR.

Hi @SWilson (WMF):: It is nice hear from you. I have installed the mediawikipage page. For testing purpose I installed the gadget from my commons.js page. The Google OCR button appeared only once. Balajijagadesh: is it only Firefox that's freezing? Could you check with other browsers? Also, could you check with the old-style toolbar vs. the "enhanced" toolbar (i.e. turn off the latter in your preferences). Is there a particular page that it's freezing with? Hi @Balajijagadesh: we usually only assign permanent adminship when there is a large local community. However, I am able to grant you further temporary access for 6 months or a year after this request. While it isn't permanent, you'd only need to worry about putting in another request each year, after which the rights will be re-granted even if nobody else comments. விவேக சிந்தாமணி பற்றிக் குறிப்பிட்டிருந்தீர்கள். விவேகசிந்தாமணி என்று சேர்த்தும், அதனையே விவேக சிந்தாமணி என்று பிரித்தும் எழுதுவதில் தவறில்லை. ஆனால், ஏதாவது ஒரு முறையினைப் பின்பற்றினால் நன்று!

கட்டுரைத் தலைப்பாக எழுதும்போது சேர்த்தும், உள்ளே எழுதும்போது வேண்டுமானால் பிரித்தும் எழுதலாம். ஏனென்றால் அது தேடுபவர்களுக்கு ஒரு வசதியாக இருக்கும். ஏனெனில் எங்குப்பிரிப்பது அல்லது சேர்ப்பது என்பது தேடுபவர்களுக்குத் தெரிய வாய்ப்பில்லையல்லவா? பல பதிவுகள் இதற்கு மாறியும் இருக்கலாம். இதுகுறித்து முறையான விவாதமும் ஆய்வும் தேவை.

அடுத்து விவேகசிந்தாமணி-பாகம் 1, விவேகசிந்தாமணி-பாகம் 2 என இரண்டு நூல்களாகப் பகுத்து வெளியிடப்பட்டுள்ளன. தனியாக ஒருபதிப்பாகவும் உண்டு. நான் பின்பற்றியது முன்னுள்ள முறையை. இதனால் குழப்பம் வேண்டாம். இவற்றில் எதனை எடுத்துக்கொள்வது என்பதுபற்றி விரிவான முறையான தமிழ்ப் பதிவர்களின், தமிழ் அறிஞர்களின் விவாதத்திற்குப் பின் முடிவுசெய்யலாம்.

For that, you have to change the fixed layout to dynamic layout. Create a Mediawiki:PageNumbers.js page according to English counterpart and localise it for Tamil. And then replace the above code to the following in Mediawiki:Common.js

I dont know how to resolve it. For example in the page [1] the numbers and texts are overlapping in the left side.

Hello, about the task you opened about translation into Tamil of the namespaces "Page", "Index", "Author", the two first are now translated (see this and the task Phabricator). For the last one, given it is not managed by the ProofreadPage extension but is specific to the wiki, some community consensus is needed, it can be a discussion on your local Village Pump or a more formal Request for comments, depending of your community habits. Key point of code, as you guess, are overflow:hidden; letter-spacing:-.18em; white-space:nowrap;, that fills 100/ of page width and hides exceeding part of the waved liner; but I don't think that is a good solution something based on a background image (but you have to set a class into MediaWiki:Common.css) or usign new CSS3 border-image-source syntax for an empty div.

I dont know the reason. Also if the horizontal width is decreased then due to the parameter overflow:hidden there is no overflow. But if the horizontal width is increased, then the width of the wave is not increased. I don't like that template, it's code is too complex. Please add User:Alex brollo/common.css content to your user common.css, then take a look to பயனர் பேச்சு:Alex brollo/Sandbox; the first option (class="waved") uses the "costom rule segment" above. @Cyarenkatnikh: We need to create policy about userpages, what can be included, not included, acceptable practices specific to Tamil wikisource. The pages https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:User_pages#What_may_I_have_in_my_user_pages? விக்கிப்பீடியா:பயனர்_பக்கம்#பயனர்வெளி பக்கங்களின் உரிமையும் தொகுத்தலும் can be considered as model. So similar page to be created. After creation link need to placed in village pump for comments from the community. If no objection then the action can be taken based on that. The userpage under discussion contains content not related to wikisource movement. Hence the content can be removed after asking to remove the content in the userpage. பக்க ஒருங்கிணைப்பில் சிக்கல்

Hi @Ankry: Thanks for reaching out. The script in the leaf is Tamil. But it is slight different from modern Tamil script. So I am unable to read it properly. So i cannot confirm its description. I doubt it is useful for wikisource. Because while scanning the thread is not removed. It hides some of the letters in the manuscript. So it may not be transcribed faithfully. As COVID-19 has forced the Wikimedia communities to stay at home and like many other affiliates, CIS-A2K has decided to suspend all offline activities till 15th September 2020 (or till further notice). I present to you for an online training session for future coming months. The CIS-A2K have conducted a Online Indic Wikisource Proofreadthon to enrich our Indian classic literature in digital format.

அன்புள்ள நண்பரே! வணக்கம்! விக்கிமூலம இணையதளத்தில் தங்கள்சீரமைப்பு தொடர்பான பணிகளுக்கு நல்வாழ்த்துதல்களை தெரிவித்துக்கொண்டு தங்கள் செம்பணி மேலும் தொடர வாழ்த்துகிறேன்.22/06/2020 அன்று நான்பதிவுசெய்திருந்த "சிவகாமி னடனம் " பக்கத்தை அனாவசியபகுதியாக நீக்கியது போன்று இந்த பணிவுரையை ஒதுக்கிவிடாமல் ஊன்றிப் பாரப்பீர்கள் என நம்புகிறேன்.பொதுவாக நான் எந்த ஒரு விக்கிபீடியா அல்லது விக்கிமூலம் பக்கங்களில் என்னுடைய கருதது அல்லது விளக்கத்தைப் புகுத்த நினைப்பதில்லை.செயவதில்லை.ஒவவொரு பக்கமும் எவ்வாறு கருத்தாக,ஆழமாக செயலாக்கம் செய்யப்பட்டு(என்னுடையது நீங்கலாக) பாதுகாக்கப்பட்டு வருவதை அறிந்துள்ளேன்.அப்படி எனக்கு வழக்கமல்லாத ஒன்றை "சிவகாமியின் சபதம்" கடைசிபகுதியில்"தலையிட்டாள் நங்கை தலைவன் தாளே" என்றவரியின் தாளே எனறவார்த்தையில் பக்கஇணைப்பு செய்தது பின்வரும் ஒரே காரணம். என்னுடைய பால்யவயதில் "கல்கி யின் பொன்னியின் செல்வன்" சிவகாமயின் சபதம்" வரலாற்று நாவல்களை(புத்தகம்-அப்போதுஇணையமில்லை) பலமுறை படித்து அத்தியாயங்களை அப்படியே பிறருக்கு நினைவுகூர்ந்து சொல்லுவேன்.அவர் னூல்களின் பகுதி என்ன உணர்வுபாவத்தை வெளியிட்டதோ அது அப்படியே என்னிடம் வெளிப்படும் வகையில் அதில் ஒன்றியவன் என்றவகையில் "தலையிட்டாள் நங்கை தலைவன் தாளே" என்ற வரிகள் அந்தப்பகுதியில் நிறைவில் சிவகாமி,மாமல்லரின் ஆழமான உணர்வுகளை என்னிடமும்(ஏனையோரிடமும்) பிரதிபலித்து விட்டது.நாவலாக வெளியான சமயம் வாசகர்கள் கடிதத்தில் அதைவெளிப்படுத்தியிருப்பார்கள்.காலப்போக்கில் அதை மறந்திருப்பார்கள் கதைதானே! என்று.நான் காலத்தையும் கணிப்பையும் மறப்பதில்லை.மனிதனின் குணத்தை கவனித்தேன்.நாவுக்கரசரின் பாடலை கவனித்தேன்!கற்பனை,கடந்தகாலம்,எதிர்காலத்தை கைவிட்டேன்.அது முடியுமா என்றால் ஓர்மையில் ,ஆழமான ஊன்றுதலில், உள்ளத்துறவில் முடியும்.அப்போது எந்த குணத்தை பற்றினோமோ அது நேரிடையாக,நிஜமாக மனிதனாக உறவாடும்.உரையாடும்.பெரியோர்களின் குணத்தைப் பற்ற பெரியோர்கள் உறவாடல் உணர்வில் காணும்.அன்று ஏகாம்பரனை வாழ்வை வெறுத்த சிவகாமி ஏகாம்பரனை மணக்க முடிவு செய்ததைஅந்த நாவல்படி அப்பர்பெருமான் எவ்வாறு கனிந்துகணித்த ரென "கல்கி" எழுதி நிறைவுசெய்தாரோ அந்தஉணர்வுதான் அச்சுபிசகாமல் அடியேனை ஆட்கொண்டது.அந்தப்பாடலின் முழுவரிகளையும் பொருளாக வைத்து பார்க்கப்பட வேண்டிய ""காணா(ண)னுபவ"" த்தின் சுருக்கமே நான் வெளியிட்ட ""சிவகாமி னடனம்"".வெறும் பிதற்றலா அல்லது பிரண்டலா, திசைதிருபப்பலா,தேங்கிய உளத்துப்பலா( உளத்துப்பாலா)என்றால் எதுவுமே அல்ல.இதுதான். முன்னம் அவனுடைய நாமங் கேட்டாள்

   மூர்த்தி யவனிருக்கும் வண்ணங் கேட்டாள்

பின்னை யவனுடைய ஆரூர் கேட்டாள்

   பெயர்த்தும் அவனுக்கே பிச்சி யானாள்

அன்னையையும் அத்தனையும் அன்றே நீத்தாள்

   அகன்றாள் அகலிடத்தார் ஆசா ரத்தைத்

தன்னை மறந்தாள்தன் நாமங் கெட்டாள்

   தலைப்பட்டாள் நங்கை தலைவன் தாளே.                   இதன் பொருள்தான்  ""சிவகாமி நடனம்""  ""திவ்ய ஆழியி""ன்   சிவகாமி-வேதனீதன் உரையாடல்.ஆகவே அந்த உரையாடலை காண வேதனீதன் ஆக நுழைந்தவன் சிவகாமியைப் போன்றே அனைத்தையும் மறந்ததால் அந்த அதீதஅலைகள் என்னிடம்  வசனங்களை பதிவுசெய்ய நான் அதை அச்சுவடிவில் May-June 2016-ஆம் ஆண்டு கல்கி பத்திரிகைஆசிரியர் திரு.ஹரிகிருஷ்ணன்  அவர்கள்  முகவரிக்கு அனுப்பனேன்.வெளியிடக் கோரி அல்ல.எழுத்தாளன் அல்ல என்று குறிப்பிட்டனுப்பினேன்.அந்தப்பகுதி உணர்வுகள் நிறைவடையாது நாவுக்கரசர் பாடல் அதில் உள்ளவரை என்பதை வெளியிடவே.விக்கிமூலம் பகுதியிலும் அதே உணர்வை முன்னெடுத்து செல்லத்தான் வெளியிட்டதால் தாங்கள் அகற்றும்வரை அது  பாதகமான அதாவது விக்கிமூலத்தின் தமிழ்வளர்ச்சிப்பதைக்கு பாதகமானது என்று அறிந்திராமைக்கு மன்னிக்கவும்.அஃதானால்நான் உரைத்த பொருள் தாங்கிய அப்பர்பாடலும் பாதகமில்லையா?அடியேனறியேன்!ஆண்டவன் அறியும்!அன்பு என்ற தத்துவத்தில் ஆண்டவனும் அடியானும் ஒன்றே என்பது தமிழ்ப்பெரியோர்கள் பாதை!அவ்வழி அடியார் வழி!தடுத்தமையால் இதை எழுதவில்லை.தவறானபுரிதல் எதுவுக்கும் இடமில்லை என்பதிவில் என தெளிவுபடுத்த.விக்கிமூலம் வகைமுகத்தை பார்க்கும் எனில் பதிவு சிவகாமினடனம் பால்(அறத்தப்பால்) முகம். நகைமுகம் என்றால் இன்பத்துப்பால்.இரண்டும் இல்லை அப்பால்வைக்கும் அன்பை என்பதை நான்தெளிந்து கொண்டேன்.ஆகவே பதியாமல் எதுவும இனி பதியாமல்  பாமர பார்வையாளனாக தொடருகிறேன்கடிதம் குறைகண்டு அல்ல.குறிகண்டுதான்!நன்றி பார்த்தசாரதி.நா (பேச்சு) 13:06, 23 சூன் 2020 (UTC)

Wikimedia Foundation Community Board seats: Call for feedback meeting

The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees is organizing a call for feedback about community selection processes between February 1 and March 14. While the Wikimedia Foundation and the movement have grown about five times in the past ten years, the Board’s structure and processes have remained basically the same. As the Board is designed today, we have a problem of capacity, performance, and lack of representation of the movement’s diversity. Direct elections tend to favor candidates from the leading language communities, regardless of how relevant their skills and experience might be in serving as a Board member, or contributing to the ability of the Board to perform its specific responsibilities. It is also a fact that the current processes have favored volunteers from North America and Western Europe. As a matter of fact, there had only been one member who served on the Board, from South Asia, in more than fifteen years of history.

In the upcoming months, we need to renew three community seats and appoint three more community members in the new seats. This call for feedback is to see what processes can we all collaboratively design to promote and choose candidates that represent our movement and are prepared with the experience, skills, and insight to perform as trustees? In this regard, it would be good to have a community discussion to discuss the proposed ideas and share our thoughts, give feedback and contribute to the process. During this workshop, we will learn to design the main page of a wiki to be responsive. This will allow the pages to be mobile-friendly, by adjusting the width and the height according to various screen sizes. [Wikimedia Foundation elections 2021] Candidates meet with South Asia + ESEAP communities

As you may already know, the 2021 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees elections are from 4 August 2021 to 17 August 2021. Members of the Wikimedia community have the opportunity to elect four candidates to a three-year term. After a three-week-long Call for Candidates, there are 20 candidates for the 2021 election.

An event for community members to know and interact with the candidates is being organized. During the event, the candidates will briefly introduce themselves and then answer questions from community members. The event details are as follows:

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

Indic Hackathon | 20-22 May 2022 + Scholarships

Hello Balajijagadesh,

We are happy to announce that the Indic MediaWiki Developers User Group will be organizing Indic Hackathon 2022, a regional event as part of the main Wikimedia Hackathon taking place in a hybrid mode during 20-22 May. The regional event will be an in-person event taking place in Hyderabad.

As it is with any hackathon, the event’s program will be semi-structured i.e. while we will have some sessions in sync with the main hackathon event, the rest of the time will be upto participants’ interest on what issues they are interested to work on. • Booklist: a collection of books to be proofread. Kindly help us to find some books in your language. The book should not be available on any third-party website with Unicode formatted text. Please collect the books and add our event page book list. You should follow the copyright guideline described here. After finding the book, you should check the pages of the book and create <pagelist/>.
• Participants: Kindly sign your name at Participants section if you wish to participate in this event.
• Reviewer: Kindly promote yourself as administrator/reviewer of this proofreadthon and add your proposal here. The administrator/reviewers could participate in this Proofreadthon.
• Some social media coverage: I would request to all Indic Wikisource community members, please spread the news to all social media channels, we always try to convince your Wikipedia/Wikisource to use their SiteNotice. Of course, you must also use your own Wikisource site notice.
• Some awards: There may be some award/prize given by CIS-A2K.

WikiConference India 2023: Open Community Call and Extension of program and scholarship submissions deadline

Thank you for supporting Wiki Conference India 2023. We are humbled by the number of applications we have received and hope to learn more about the work that you all have been doing to take the movement forward. In order to offer flexibility, we have recently extended our deadline for the Program and Scholarships submission- you can find all the details on our Meta Page.

COT is working hard to ensure we bring together a conference that is truly meaningful and impactful for our movement and one that brings us all together. With an intent to be inclusive and transparent in our process, we are committed to organizing community sessions at regular intervals for sharing updates and to offer an opportunity to the community for engagement and review.
